Long shot. Very long shot
editThis is a long shot. You are permitted to say "no". However, the only certainty is that if I do not share my problem with you, you won't even get the opportunity to think about it.
I attach a picture of what we in England think of as a Mazda 929. Although the license plate is Dutch the photograph was taken by me in Cambridge, England (I think in Brookside, a little street between the Botanic Gardens and Lensfield Road, in case you know the city). It was taken using an Olympus OM2 35 mm camera which was quite a good camera in its day, but I think I may have been short of funds and it was probably taken using low quality colour slide film (probable Boots or Photo-Porst own-brand). In any case by the time I scanned it and uploaded it to wikipedia it was pretty dire. Various well intentioned wiki-comrades have improved it over the years. I don't think they ever sold a lot of these cars, and although there are other photos of these cars on wiki-commons, none of them should ever be mistaken for a wiki-show-stopper. "My" moderately dire wiki picture has been used for wiki entries on the car in various languages (not, I am pretty sure, linked by me).
Why should you care? Indeed. But then again, maybe you're ahead of me.
I recently spotted that you had done a brilliant job of improving an only slightly less dire picture I uploaded some years ago of an Austin Montego. Also, as it happens, in Cambridge. Is there any chance that you might be tempted to work the same magic on this one? For information, I am pretty sure that the last time I saw the car it really was a sort of woodbine shade of metallic green. It's a colour with which some software programmes seem to have difficulty. The houses in the background are a sort of dirty greyish brown (most of them are still there). I agree that the "vaguely golden" coloured version of the car looks better, but I just thought I'd mention it. I have no particular "pride of authorship" preference between green and gold. Just thought I'd mention it.
To repeat, you are more than welcome to think and say "hell - no". (Though you could leave out the hell bit if you wished.) But you will appreciate that there is - according to me - nothing to be lost by asking the question. And thank you, since you did, for reading it. Regards Charles01 (talk) 16:52, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Charles01: ; Hi there. Thanks for letting me know about this- I'll take a proper look at it when I have enough time to do it justice. All the best, Ubcule (talk) 19:25, 3 November 2018 (UTC)

Ray Charles
editIf I were to upload a new update on the Pepsi ray charles with ray Charles would that save the photo from deletion? A.R.M. 08:51, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- @ARMcgrath: - I've replied to this at Commons:Deletion requests/File:PepsistuffRayCharles.jpg. Ubcule (talk) 16:27, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
@Ubcule: so I can’t upload a new photo with the Pepsi can without the Ray Charles okay. Didn’t even think this would happen. A.R.M. 21:06, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- @ARMcgrath: ; You can upload a picture of a Pepsi can. But not one with the Ray Charles picture showing, unless it can be demonstrated that the Ray Charles picture itself is freely usable. Sorry. Ubcule (talk) 21:11, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
I uploaded the same photo but I cropped the ray Charles photo so it’s not visible but the can itself. A.R.M. 21:25, 17 August 2019 (UTC)
- @ARMcgrath: ; That looks fine, thanks for the upload. Ubcule (talk) 21:37, 17 August 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers
editA community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect
user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect
user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

See the latest deletion entries last week Myloufa made? Wanna inspect if they could be retained or not? -- Bull-Doser (talk) 01:19, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Bull-Doser: Please see my comments here, here, here and here.
- Please note that there are still quality problems with many of your images. I argued to have these ones retained because there aren't any better examples, and they are of usable quality, but I would still argue in favour of deletion if the quality was so bad that an image was not really usable. cropping
editPlease upload a NEW file if you are cropping, instead of overwriting the existing file. Thanks Famartin (talk) 00:25, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Famartin: I assume you're talking about your image File:2019-11-08 14 17 20 An unopened roll of Smarties in the Dulles section of Sterling, Virginia.jpg, which I uploaded a cropped version of yesterday?
- The guidelines on overwriting do- by default- permit overwriting images with minor changes, including minor cropping that is ultimately inconsequential. The example given here- where dead space is removed- is arguably similar to the crop I carried out on your image.
- However, I also respect people's wish (and right) not to have alternate versions of their files- however minor the changes- replace the originals, and in this case I'll keep an eye out and avoid doing this with your files in future.
- Thank you for taking the time to upload the modified version elsewhere as well, instead of simply reverting it (and losing the edit).
- FWIW, if you prefer to explicitly indicate that you don't want some (or all) of your files overwritten, this should be possible. Although there are some "do not overwrite" templates it's not clear whether one exists for the original uploader to request their file not be overwritten (without any further reason). If there isn't one, I'm sure it would still be okay for you to indicate in your own words that you didn't want a particular image overwritten.
- Hope this helps,

Help Adjusting/Cropping Images
editWould you be able too help adjust - crop some of these?
- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:EHeckhart.jpg (More centered, more brighter, maybe trim the above the head and sides, getting rid of some extra space?)
- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PaulStewart55.jpg (Maybe trim above the head a bit?)
Hope you maybe able too help a bit. Thanks in advance.--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 15:38, 14 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Black BIC Ballpoint: ; Modified versions at File:EHeckhart (crop and brighter).jpg and File:PaulStewart55 (crop and levels).jpg. There are various different versions in the histories, you're free to be able to choose which one you prefer and revert to that version.
- I reduced the contrast of the Paul Stewart image in some versions as (IMHO) the original scan was too contrasty.
- Also, if you go to Preferences->Gadgets, you can enable something called "CropTool" which lets you perform crops of images and might be useful for you. (Depending upon the image, rather than cropping the original version, you might want to upload a copy under a different filename (e.g. "OriginalImage (crop version).jpg"), ignoring the warning, and then crop the new upload using CropTool.)
- Hope this helps,Ubcule (talk) 13:54, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much!--68.70.6.237 17:14, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Black BIC Ballpoint: No problem! Ubcule (talk) 20:39, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Good evening, my friend, When able could you make this headshot a little brighter (I cropped it myself, it just needs a better contrast).
Thanks and enjoy what's left of the weekend.--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 22:53, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
- @Black BIC Ballpoint: ; Hi. I've uploaded the brightened and cropped version to File:RutaLeeDec09 (lighter crop).jpg.
- I've reverted the changes you made to the original upload at File:RutaLeeDec09.jpg as I feel that this is not a change everyone would agree with unreservedly- some people may think that the original is preferable for some uses.
- Please see Commons:Overwriting_existing_files#Minor_improvements for the guidelines on overwriting existing versions of images.
- Generally, if I am in doubt, I will upload a modified version of an image under a new filename.
- Hope this helps,

Hi, Friend. Could you help make this a brighter - greyscale for me? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JUNEVincent_(cropped).jpg It would be much appreciated; thanks!--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 20:21, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Black BIC Ballpoint: Done. Can't make much "brighter" without making washed out as was obviously intended as high contrast image. Contrast slightly reduced, but that's it. Ubcule (talk) 13:23, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Oh, I'm so happy with it! It came out just like I had hoped it would, I have one more like this and we're good to go from here.
If you could do the same with this one like the other, I'll be a happy camper. Thanks again and be safe!--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 22:55, 21 June 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much; I have just ONE final one that I would appreciate help in getting to a brighter greyscale;
This is my last one; I'm taking off for a while. Thanks so much and have a good one!--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 19:07, 23 June 2020 (UTC)
Thank you!--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 17:31, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
Hi, my friend, When you have time, could you help make this picture brighter, and a bit more better quality, when you have the time?
This will be my last one for a while; I'm taking off and have a good Fourth of July weekend. Will catch up whenever, I get back on.--Black BIC Ballpoint (talk) 19:36, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Black BIC Ballpoint: Can't do anything about that one; it's low quality because it's obviously been upscaled from a lower resolution version, and the black areas are "crushed" (i.e. completely lacking in detail), so brightening it up won't fix it. (See image history to see why this is). Ubcule (talk) 17:28, 1 August 2020 (UTC)
Hello, friend; it's been a while, I have a new one for you too help me with when time allows...

Adding derivative copies questions
editFor the first time I tried to use the derivativeFX tool to add an edited version of an existing file. I was trying to use one of your derivative uploads as a model. Everything seemed to work except it did not put a thumbnail on the original image page like yours did. Why? Once I understand this I will probably have another question. Thanks. Jim Evans (talk) 00:29, 11 April 2020 (UTC)
- @Jim Evans: ; I used to use Derivative FX, but haven't done so for years now, so I can't really comment on it. (Can't remember why I stopped using it).
- I tend to do things semi-manually now. If you're using the {{Derivedfrom}} template, it has an option parameter "display=150" that shows a thumbnail of the specified size. So do many others IIRC.
- BTW, if you're going to make more than basic modifications (crop, colour balance, sharp, brightness etc.) to an existing upload (as you did to File:Fargo_Theatre_-_Fargo.jpg) *or* even if you upload the modified copy under a separate filename, it's a good idea to add the {{Modified}} template.
- (Actually, I'd say that if you're modifying an existing upload enough to warrant "modified", it's likely that it might be a good idea to consider uploading the new version under a modified filename. (See Commons:Overwriting_existing_files).) That's a common-sense issue depending upon the original image though, so I wouldn't say it was a blanket rule.
- All the best,

TDK MiniDisc and AA-battery 200703.jpg
editHello Ubcule,
saw your development of the MiniDisc with AA-cell. To be honest, I had the same idea, but didn't realized it. Which software did you use? Please let me know, thank you in advance. Regards, --Wikisympathisant (talk) 18:20, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Wikisympathisant: It's just a few minor changes with Photoshop CS5 (which is pretty old nowadays anyway). All the best, Ubcule (talk) 18:25, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Ubcule: Thank you for your fast answer :-) that's the way technics and internet should go everytime ... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikisympathisant (talk • contribs)
- @Wikisympathisant: No problem! BTW, I use Photoshop because I've had it for years and am used to it. But I'm guessing you could probably do much the same thing with GIMP which is free anyway. Ubcule (talk) 19:09, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Ubcule: Thank you for your fast answer :-) that's the way technics and internet should go everytime ... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikisympathisant (talk • contribs)
- @Ubcule: yes, I heard of GIMP, and it's fine, but the handling should be something like an own science. From your words I got the idea, to look for an older (non-expensive) photoshop ... :-) --Wikisympathisant (talk) 19:39, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- @Wikisympathisant: I'd say it's more important to know what tools you have and how to use them; PS doesn't have a magic wand to do all that easily.
- I'm not a PS expert, but (for that image) I knew how to use layers, layer (blending) modes and so on, how to cut and extend the reflection on the dark part, then skew it so it lined up at the other end. But GIMP supports all that too.
- For other images, things like LAB mode and wide-radius unsharp mask (to improve local contrast on "flat" looking pictures) are useful. But these are all techniques, and- again- GIMP supports all that as far as I know.
- The only thing that PS *might* be better with for this sort of thing is the auto-repair tool for spots and other things.
- People complain about the GIMP interface, but PS isn't always that intuitive either. I think a lot of people are just used to PS.
- I think the new versions of PS are subscription only, so even if you learn the older versions, you risk getting stuck with that ageing software and/or "locked in" to Photoshop in general. Although I do use it (for the reasons I already gave), that shouldn't be taken as a recommendation- but the choice is yours!

Thanks for uploading File:Madero (and) Pascual Orozco. (21879503251) (cropped version).jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Cropping images
editI kindly ask you to crop images into new files, especially with the ones which have been out there for years, like this image. Cropping them into the same file can be seen as controversial sometimes. Best regards, RodRabelo7 (talk) 18:55, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
- @RodRabelo7: ; Hi there,
- If I understand correctly, you're suggesting that overwriting an image with a cropped version should *never* be done?
- This is incorrect; there's no blanket ban. Commons has guidelines covering *some* cases where this is acceptable (and others where it still isn't).
- In particular, I believe that the crop above is a clear example of removal of excess border space. (Note that the original *already* had little space at the top or bottom anyway. Even after my crop, there was still more space to the left and right than the top and bottom).
- As I'd rather this didn't get into an argument, I've opened a discussion on my interpretation of the guidelines at the Village Pump. I'd be grateful if you could read what I had to say- and respond- there. Thank you!

- @Reppop: ; I'm not the person who transferred this to Commons; this is just a crop of an existing upload (File:Westwood_DJin_at_Radio_1's_Big_Weekend_in_2010.jpg).
- That said, since it appears that the original upload *was* a copyvio, I've no problem with both that and the cropped version being deleted. I'm curious how you found that out, though, since the original doesn't credit where it came from? (Is there a reverse image seach that works on videos too?) Ubcule (talk) 00:20, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- Oh yeah, I know you weren't the one who originally uploaded it, I just put the notice on the uploader's page since I it would notify them anyways. I just saw the quality and thought "that's a video for sure" because of the quality and the way it was positioned; it's way too close to Tim Westwood to be taken by an audience member. I then simply looked it up on YouTube and watched the video with the closest outfit and found the frame. reppoptalk 00:25, 12 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Reppop: - Ah, nicely spotted, thanks! Ubcule (talk) 12:21, 12 June 2023 (UTC)

Tower block archives
editHi, just to say thanks for adjusting the colour on those 1980s tower block photos, such a big improvement without looking false. Won't be an easy task but hope you find time to do them all - as you have seen, most of those I uploaded for Scotland were taken at 6am in January or something, almost white skies against big dark buildings, not great for contrast. If you find you don't have the time I wouldn't mind helping out, but my tech and skill levels aren't great for the task so would need a bit of guidance. But if you're happy to carry on, please do! Crowsus (talk) 02:31, 24 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Crowsus: - Yes, it's clear that some (especially the Glasgow and west coast ones) were taken under less than perfect circumstances.
- When and how the original photographs were taken isn't made clear on the original site. However, I can't see any evidence that they were part of a formally-supported project, and since virtually all have been taken by Miles Glendinning, I'm assuming that this was something that he'd taken it upon himself to document.
- Guessing again, I suspect this was (at least partly) fitted around wherever his employment took him at the time and may have had to be "squeezed in" around the day job. That would explain why some appear to have been taken (e.g.) early in the morning or whenever, i.e. before or after work(?)
- Regarding my versions...
- I took very deliberate care to ensure that the adjustments I made were essentially just brightness, contrast and colour balance adjustments, with some use of the highlight/shadow filter (and making it clear when and if that was used).
- Since these are essentially historical documents, I didn't want to go beyond that, and intentionally didn't cross (I hope) into actively retouching or "fixing" anything that didn't reflect the original photograph (regardless of whether or not that might have provided an aesthetic improvement).
- I also uploaded these versions under new filenames as I wanted to leave the unmodified originals for reasons of veracity.
- I had trouble achieving an accurate colour balance with some images, especially the more underexposed blue/cyan-tinted ones taken under early-morning or winter(?) light.
- For example, with this image, it was essentially impossible. (It turned out that the red channel had so little detail and contrast, that there was essentially nothing there to work with or recover.)
- In cases like that- where I couldn't meaningfully correct the colour balance using the sliders, and the result was more of a distraction than anything- I felt it was preferable simply to convert to image to monchrome then adjust the brightness and contrast. (That's why some are black-and-white only).
- (It's not clear how much of the colour channel/balance issues are due to the original photographs, how much are due to their age, and how much of it related to the difficulty in scanning such material).
- Anyway, I've done quite a lot of these, but I somewhat burned out on it after a while, so I've given it a rest for now.
- While I'll likely come back and do quite a few of the most obvious candidates at some point in the future- at least for those taken in Scotland- it's unlikely that I'll ever do them all.
- Regardless, these are all very worthwhile photographs I think we can both be grateful that someone bothered to take in the first place.

Hello Ubcule -- I suggest you post your very capable analysis to this image's discussion page, to create a more permanent record. -- WikiPedant (talk) 17:53, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- @WikiPedant: - Thanks for your response, and I was bearing that in mind. I posted to the Village Pump because I was more likely to get a response there; if necessary I can link to or copy that discussion at the image discussion page later. But we'll see how the discussion goes first.
- All the best, Ubcule (talk) 18:39, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
A barnstar for you
editHello Ubcule,
I would like to thank you for doing what we all have missed since 2016, namely taking a closer look at this image. It’s a shame that such an extensive (and simple) undeclared manipulation has not been noticed for several years, not even during FP nomination; thank you for finally doing what had to be done and for reporting this issue. Best, --Aristeas (talk) 10:00, 16 January 2024 (UTC) |

"Selective sharpening" you performed on an image - how?
editHi Ubcule, I saw that you sharpened at least the "14.400" letters and some more in the image Fax modem antigo.jpg. I find the result to be quite good, while I am mostly not satisfied when I try things like that. Which tool do you use, or what technique? I am a quite advanced user of GIMP. Pittigrilli (talk) 13:26, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Pittigrilli: - That was almost ten years ago, so I can't remember the specific details.
- However, I normally do it the same way- create a duplicate of the layer you want to sharpen, sharpen it, then use the erase tool to remove the bits you don't want sharpened (or to reveal the bits you *do* want sharpened if the unsharpened layer is the one on top).
- I'd usually set the erase tool with its dimensions set to a fairly wide radius (a quarter or more of the image width?) and the softest possible edge (i.e. hardness zero, giving a circle that goes from zero erase at the edge to 100% erase near the middle) so you get partial transparency that graduates the erase effect in seamlessly.
- I might also have done the letters separately, but I'm not sure. If I had, I'd have used the same technique, but with a much smaller erase brush and maybe less soft edge.
- I used Photoshop CS5- quite an old version- with (probably) the "Smart Sharpen" filter set to "lens blur". I assume that has a convolution matrix that is better at fixing lens blur than the generic unsharp mask. No idea if GIMP has that or just the regular unsharp mask. Don't worry if it doesn't, as I suspect the difference is more significant for larger radius settings (i.e. greater blur) than seen here. In this case, the correct radius and amount of sharpening are probably more significant.
- I'm not sure that my work on this one was all that great, to be honest. Then again, I wouldn't have said the original was an outstanding enough image to be worth spending too much time on either.
- Also, in hindsight, I think I probably should have uploaded the modified version as a separate image.
- All the best, Ubcule (talk) 14:40, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
- Great and thorough explanation, thank you for taking the time. I agree with the problematic topic of "modified version as separate image", which I often have - e.g., there is an image which is used in 10 or 20 Wikipedias, and which has a serious flaw or the like - according to the rules, any significant change other than a mere crop would require a separate uploading - but then, the bad image is still used by 20 WPs worldwide... I sometimes went the long way to change 20 Wikipedias to my improved separate image, but in some cases I just uploaded my version over the old version (unless a really grave change) and spared the time... In order to give you something back: I wrote something about perspective changes with IrfanView on top of my user page (with a link to the info on my talk page). Maybe that is helpful to you. Best Greetings, Pittigrilli (talk) 14:56, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

Also:
Say bull doser thank you if you know him
editI dont really know exactly why Bull doser has his work problems you dont wanna tell us, but besides that he has contributed a lot of great work to wikipedia with his images, so if you know him the him: Thank you for your hard and valuable work. 2806:101E:A:7662:952E:EFE9:E526:3196 19:17, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
- @2806:101E:A:7662:952E:EFE9:E526:3196: - Unfortunately I don't know Bull-Doser personally beyond my interactions with him on Commons. The reasons for the block were discussed here, and while I would have preferred a just a partial block if that was workable, the consensus was in favour of a total block.
- I'll copy your message over to his page, as he is still able to read and edit that.
- Thank you, Ubcule (talk) 22:40, 3 July 2024 (UTC)
