Sabah is a haven for adventure seekers around the world. If you haven’t already, this is your sign to cross Sabah off your “to-visit” list!

However, this time we are bringing you some things to do and eat in the West Coast region. The West Coast of Sabah is home to some of the region’s most beautiful and diverse landscapes. This division comprises the Papar, Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kota Belud, and Ranau districts.

From the highlands to the sea, buckle up ‘coz you’re in for a ride!

1. DESA Dairy Farm

Dubbed “Little New Zealand”, DESA Dairy Farm is a must-go if you’re planning a trip to Sabah. The 199-hectare dairy farm offers a unique and educational experience for visitors of all ages. Here, you’ll be able to witness the cow-milking process, feed the goats and rabbits, and learn about dairy farming. You should also take the chance to purchase dairy products like ice cream, milk, and yoghurt at the farm. Take a scenic two-hour drive from Kota Kinabalu to get here and a detour after to the Kundasang War Memorial and the Poring Hot Springs! No car? No problem, be road trip-ready with TREVO!

Location 📍Ladang Tenusu Desa Cattle, Jalan Cinta Mata Mesilou, 89308 Kundasang, Sabah.

2. Enjoy a Scenic Walk on Jambatan Tamparuli

Jambatan Tamparuli, also known as the Tamparuli Bridge, is a famous landmark in the Tamparuli District. The bridge is historically significant, built in the early 1900s during the British colonial era. The original suspension bridge was washed away in a flood in 1999. The new bridge structure is now more solid, supported by concrete pillars and steel cables. Spanning 200 meters, you can walk across the bridge and take photos with the stunning backdrop of the Tuaran River and the surrounding Tuaran town. Fun fact: the old bridge inspired the local folk song “Jambatan Tamparuli” by Justin Lusah. Give it a listen!

Location 📍Jambatan Tamparuli, Jalan Lama Tamparuli, Tamparuli, Sabah.

3. Drop by for some Kelapa Bakar and Lokan Panggang

As you make your way down from the highlands, stop by for some kelapa bakar (grilled coconut) and lokan panggang (BBQ clams). This popular street food spot is situated along Jalan Sulaman, Tuaran. Savour the lokan panggang grilled to perfection with hints of onions and ginger paired with some special sambal sauce. Then, cleanse your palate with mouth-watering kelapa bakar with its smoky and slightly charred flavour.

Location 📍Kelapa Bakar dan Lokan Panggang, Jalan Sulaman, 89200 Tuaran, Sabah.

4. Visit the Beautiful Kota Kinabalu Mosque

Do not miss the Kota Kinabalu City Mosque on the way back to the city. Also known as the “floating mosque” among the locals, the city mosque is situated along the coastal road. It is surrounded by a man-made lagoon and displays similar architectural features to the Nabawi Mosque in Medina. Deemed one of the most beautiful mosques in Malaysia, this majestic mosque accommodates up to 12,000 worshippers at a time. Also, if you have a thing for photography, a morning visit is recommended to capture the magical sunrise over the mosque. Just remember to dress and behave respectfully when visiting.

Location 📍Kota Kinabalu City Mosque, Jalan Pasir, Jalan Teluk Likas, Kampung Likas, 88400 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

5. Gaya Street Sunday Market

Fill your Sunday morning with a stroll along the stretch of the vibrant Gaya Street Sunday market. A popular destination for locals and tourists, here you can find an array of goods, from fresh produce to handicrafts, antiques, and souvenirs. Apart from that, you’ll also have the opportunity to sample some local cuisines, delicacies, and more street food! While you’re there, try to spot the legendary Caprilla Ice Cream truck that has been a generational local favourite. With that said, Gaya Street Sunday market is not only retail therapy but also a cultural experience.

Location 📍Gaya Street, Pusat Bandar Kota Kinabalu, 88000 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

6. Try Sabahan Delicacies

Eat like the locals with Sabah’s rich and diverse culinary heritage! Among the recommended dishes is Hinava, a raw fish salad made with fresh tuna or mackerel mixed with lime juice, sliced onions, and chilli. Another popular dish is Ambuyat, a starchy dish made from the sago palm tree that is typically served with various side dishes, like fish, chicken, or vegetables. Other must-try dishes include Pinasakan, a fish dish cooked in a spicy mixture of ginger, chilli, and turmeric; and Tuhau, a traditional condiment from wild ginger. And if you have the guts for some creepy crawlies, take your shot at eating the Butod (sago grub)!

Locations

📍My Native Sabah, Lot 48, 1st Floor, Blok F, Lorong 333-5 PLAZA 333, Jalan Bypass Penampang, 89500 Penampang, Sabah.

📍Little Sulap, 5, Lorong Dewan, Pusat Bandar Kota Kinabalu, 88000 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

7. Yii Siang Hainan Ngiu Chap

Hearty meals are essential in every travel, and Yii Siang Laksa Ngiu Chap HAS to be on your list! This eatery is well-known for its “Ngiu Chap”, or beef broth, specially prepared in Hainan style and served with noodles or rice. A great contender for this dish would have to be their flagship menu of Laksa. You can choose from either beef, seafood, or chicken in a rich, savoury broth in a bowl.

Location 📍Yii Siang Hainan Ngiu Chap, 36, Ground Floor, Block C, Nountun Industrial, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

8. Chill at KK Waterfront

The party continues in KK Waterfront, a leisure and entertainment destination located at the heart of the city. Relish the stunning views of the South China Sea while enjoying the ocean breeze. Satiate your appetite by choosing from a wide range of cuisines, from traditional Malaysian dishes to international flavours. In addition to that, KK Waterfront also features a range of entertainment options for you to let loose!

Location 📍KK Waterfront, 88000 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

9. Monsopiad Cultural Village

For an immersive cultural experience, head to Monsopiad Cultural Village in Penampang, Sabah. This traditional village aims to preserve the customs and heritage of the Kadazandusun people, one of the indigenous groups in Sabah. One of the village’s main attractions is the House of Monsopiad, a replica of the traditional home of Monsopiad, a legendary Kadazandusun warrior and headhunter. Visitors can also witness traditional dances and music performances and participate in various cultural activities, such as blowpipe shooting and batik painting.

Location 📍Monsopiad Heritage Village, Kampung Kuai Kandazon, Jalan Putatan Ramayah, 89507 Penampang, Sabah.

10. Catch a sunset at Tanjung Aru Beach

After a long day of adventure and exploration, it is time to unwind by catching the stunning sunset at Tanjung Aru Beach. This iconic beach is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, and you have to be there to experience the surrealness of Mother Nature. Relax on the soft sand, dip your toes in the warm water, and watch as twilight shifts in the most magical way. Whether you’re travelling solo or with your precious ones, add Tanjung Aru Beach sunset to your itinerary – it’s the perfect way to end the day.

Location 📍Tanjung Aru Beach, Jalan Mat Salleh, 88100 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Those are among our recommendations when spending time in the West Coast part of Sabah.

And if you’re travelling here in May, it’s even better as Sabahans celebrate Kaamatan or the Harvest Festival! That means it’s just a perfect time to venture around.

Leave your transportation worries behind, as TREVO is here to offer you a wide range of cars to choose from! Plus, you can enjoy up to 25% OFF your booking this Kaamatan with promo code KAAMATAN25. Booking period: 15 May- 4 June 2023. Driving Period: 26 May – 4 June 2023.

Alexa, play “Balik Kampung”! As this familiar tune fills the airwaves, that’s when you know it’s that time of the year again. There’s nothing quite like reuniting with your loved ones, putting up Raya decors, and indulging in traditional festive delicacies and Raya cookies.

However, travelling during cuti Raya season can be challenging with the heavy traffic, overcrowded commute, and high travel costs. Welp, that’s where TREVO comes in and THIS is a sign to setel your Raya transport early.

Here are some TREVO tips to make your Raya road trip smoother than a ketupat. 😎

1. Take a break

Avoid dozing off behind the wheels! It is very important to stay alert during your journey. Get enough sleep the night before you begin your drive, and stop at a designated rest area to catch a break. Maintaining a good posture, especially for long-distance driving, is also advisable so that you won’t slouch and be at risk of falling asleep.

2. Obey road rules

Put your full attention on the drive. Get rid of any distractions that can cause accidents to happen. The road isn’t a racing pit, so follow the allowed speed limit, don’t overtake dangerously, and be sure you and the passengers are buckled up.

3. Rent a bigger car

Enjoy a stress-free journey with ample space for both passengers and luggage. With a wide range of big cars from our TREVO hosts, you will easily find the perfect ride to balik kampung in style. Bigger cars also mean you can comfortably carpool with friends to save yourselves from crammed transportation. Plus…who wouldn’t love a little legroom?

4. Use road trip planning tools

Travel apps can be a game-changer during the Hari Raya season. Travel apps like Waze, Google Maps or PLUS App can provide real-time updates on traffic conditions, suggesting alternative routes to help you avoid gridlock. Besides that, they’re also helpful in finding the closest petrol station, rest area, or even halal eateries for your pit stops.

5. Have sing-alongs

Whether you’re driving alone, or with passengers, singing your heart out to a great playlist will ease the journey. Plus, it can keep you feeling refreshed along the way! Just make sure you and everyone else is safe.

6. Stay protected

Don’t compromise you and your loved one’s safety! Get covered with TREVO’s SCDW best protection plan. To ensure you don’t miss it, you can choose your desired SCDW plans in your TREVO car booking process. Driving back home with extra protection will reward you with peace of mind.

7. You don’t have to be alone

Unexpected events are bound to happen on any travels. That’s why we offer 24/7 Live Chat to ensure you feel safe and supported at all times. Whether you have a question about your booking or need any assistance along the way, our support team is a chat away.

8. Save MORE when you rent longer

Raya kan sebulan? Make sure to book your TREVO car to cater for full Raya family time. This way, you wouldn’t have to susah-susah extend your TREVO car booking. Not to mention, you’ll save so much more when you book long-term.

Here’s how to do long-term booking on TREVO:

9. Remember to add mileage

Now you can drive further by adding your mileage upfront! This will make your journey smoother AND give you the best savings! Read more about the whats and hows here.

10. Use the BEST available promo

There are tons of promos available on TREVO. It’s like our very own Raya gift box to you! And although having promos is always a good thing, you’ll still need to choose the one that works best for your trip. Plan ahead and maximise your savings on transportation with TREVO for an affordable and headache-free holiday!

See below on how to claim limited-time promos:

MOST IMPORTANT: Leave no one behind!

Raya is all about getting together for a jolly good time. Balik kampung doesn’t have to be a lonely one. The shared experience of travelling and celebrating together will create lasting memories and strengthen the bond between each other. Also, sing-alongs to “Seloka Hari Raya” are better together!

Now you’re all prepped up for the annual festive road trip, it’s time to book your comfy and reliable kereta Raya from our TREVO hosts.

Looking for more information about this EXTRA Safe safeguard for TREVO Hosts?

We are here to help!

1. How does TREVO Shield work?

TREVO Shield is the first Insurance Policy purely for car-sharing Hosts (excluding Commercial Hosts) in Malaysia. Together with our premium insurer, Allianz, we have launched an insurance policy that safeguards the car(s) you host even more with our innovative insurance coverages.

In the rare event where your Guests unintentionally cause injuries and damages to another person and their car while driving your car, TREVO Shield will cover your car against self damage, and fire & theft. TREVO Shield also provides you with EXTRA coverage in the rare cases of driving accidents by Guests — to your car’s body, paint and bumper. *

Other TREVO Shield EXTRA Safe features include:

* Only available on the Shield 65 Plan and Shield 60 Plan

** Only available on the Shield 60 Plan

2. Do I still need my own motor insurance policy if I already have TREVO Shield?

Yes. It’s mandatory to embark onto TREVO Shield for the motor protections extended to P2P car sharing, together with other EXTRA Safe features offered by TREVO. You have to be an Allianz Private motor insurance policyholder. The TREVO Shield Plan is an add-on safeguard that complements your Allianz Private motor insurance policy. To gain a better understanding of how TREVO Shield works alongside your personal motor insurance policy, feel free to contact our team here.

3. Is it safe and legal to use TREVO Shield?

Yes, underwritten by Allianz General Insurance Company (M) Berhad, TREVO Shield (termed by TREVO) is a Peer-to-Peer Insurance Add-on that is recognised by Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (PIAM) and Bank Negara Malaysia.

4. Which TREVO Shield Plan suits me best?

Please keep in mind that the Plans which offer a higher earning (% of Trip Rate) are conditioned with higher liability each time you make an Insurance Claim, and less EXTRA Safe features.

Choose a Plan with the ideal Earning to Coverage Ratio
If you opt for Shield 60 or Shield 65, you will earn 60% or 65% of the Trip Rate respectively, Having said that, these Plans offer EXTRA Safety features, for instance for Shield 65, you’ll receive EXTRA coverage for exterior dents / damage and a lower Surplus Charge of RM400.

Meanwhile, Shield 60 enables you to earn 60% of the Trip Rate. It provides you with EXTRA Safety features that are unavailable in other Plans such as No Claim Discount (NCD) Relief and ZERO Surplus Charge Excess.

Every TREVO Shield Plan comes with a different set of features. Pick the Plan that best suits your earning goals and safety needs as a Host.

5. What happens if my car is involved in an accident and my car is insured through TREVO Shield?

Hosts (excluding Commercial Hosts) will be contractually protected against physical damages (collision and other comprehensive causes), fire & theft, up to the insured value of the Vehicle. Establish contact with TREVO Customer Service at known point of Incident happening.

TREVO shall be responsible for handling the insurance claims process on behalf of Hosts, with reasonable assistance provided by the Hosts and subject to the Hosts’ compliance to TREVO and Insurance terms and conditions.

For post-Trip damages and incidentals, TREVO will assist/work closely with You, Insurer’s panel inspectors, and the police to carry out the necessary investigations.

6. In the event of an accident, how should I proceed with my TREVO Shield claim?

For all claims, Hosts are required to submit a report (Booking Issue Report) via the TREVO app.

For MINOR damages, we may at our discretion directly reimburse Hosts for damages:

  • caused by the Guests during a Trip
  • for which repairs cost is less than the claim threshold of RM1,500 as set out in Annex 2 of our Terms of Service
  • in the sole opinion of TREVO, does not constitute normal wear and tear on the Vehicle.

For MAJOR damages:

For any major incidents that require immediate attention, Hosts may reach out to TREVO Customer Service via Livechat on TREVO app.

For post-Trip major damages and incidentals, TREVO will assist/work closely with Allianz’s panel inspectors and police to carry out the necessary investigations. In the event the cost of any damage to the Vehicle (as ascertained by the P2P Insurer’s panel workshop) is more than RM1,499, you agree to make a claim from the P2P Insurer to rectify/repair such damage or bears the cost of repair yourself.

In the event of a loss or damage arising from a Trip for which you are entitled to make claims under TREVO Shield, such claims are approved by Allianz. You shall pay a Surplus Charge (according to the Shield Plan) to TREVO and Allianz shall, at their option, pay you:

  • the reasonable or actual expenses incurred in repairing the Vehicle; or
  • the fair market value of your Vehicle, or the sum insured in the applicable policy, whichever is lower,
determined by your insurer at its sole discretion.

7. Why do I have to pay Surplus Charge for Shield 65 and Shield 75?

Excess is the fees payable to TREVO in facilitating your Insurance claim filing.

For example, in the case of Shield 60, TREVO Shield offers Zero Surplus Charge where you are supposedly financially responsible for in other Plans, in the event of physical damage to your car during a TREVO trip before you’re eligible for reimbursement.

8. If I choose Shield 60 or Shield 65, how will these TREVO Shield Plans provide coverage for Exterior Dents and Damages?

TREVO allows our liability to the dents caused by TREVO Guests as per the guidelines below:

a) The paint and body of your car (excluding tyres, side mirrors, windscreen, windows, antenna, and any accessories)

i)          Dent: A depression or contouring on a single panel 2 inches or more in diameter

ii)         Scratch: More than 3 linear inches in length

b) Your car’s bumper

Scratches or dents to bumpers and attached components, provided the scratches are cosmetic in nature and do not compromise the safety and function of the vehicle.

i)           Dent: A depression or contouring on a single panel 2 inches or more in diameter

ii)        Scratch: More than 3 linear inches in length

The maximum payable amount under Exterior Minor Dent/Damage policy is RM1,000 per renewal of your Base Private Motor Insurance with P2P Insurer.

9. I’ve chosen Shield 60. How will I benefit from No Claim Discount (NCD) Relief?

NCD is a form of premium discount for not having made a claim during the preceding period of your Private Motor Insurance (provided the period of insurance exceeds one year).

If TREVO Guests meet with an Incident which will give rise to a claim on TREVO Shield, the NCD of your Private Motor Insurance entitlement that you have accumulated would drop to zero at the next renewal and your NCD will start all over again. TREVO follows the NCD clauses as stipulated in your Private Motor Insurance Policy

NCD Relief

In consideration of the Shield 60, TREVO agrees to compensate you the NCD that you may forfeit due to a claim being made under TREVO Shield. The amount is one-off and is equal to your NCD entitlement as stipulated in your Private Motor Insurance Policy for the current Period of Insurance.

NCD Relief provided under Shield 60 is terminated automatically when:

  •  Insurer make a payment for a claim under this Relief
  •  You change your Shield 60 Plan to other Plans
  •  You withdraw your NCD entitlement from your Private Motor Insurance

How NCD Relief works:

For example, if the full premium of your comprehensive Private Motor Insurance policy is RM1,000, and you have accumulated NCD of 55% in year 2022.

Actual premium paid in 2022 @ 55% NCD = RM450

NCD = RM550

Let’s say in the same year, a TREVO Guest gets into an incident with your car and files for TREVO Shield claim. The effects of the claim are:

  1. TREVO will compensate you with a one-off RM550 owing to the NCD Relief in 2022
  2. You will pay RM1,000 for your 2023 Private Motor Insurance Renewal
  3. Nullify your NCD of your Private Motor Insurance (NCD=0%)

10. What is not covered by TREVO Shield?

TREVO Shield coverage excludes any injuries and damages that are caused when you are driving your own TREVO-listed car, as it is purely a car-sharing Insurance Policy that safeguards your car when it is being driven by Guests.

When you are driving your own TREVO-listed car, your personal Allianz motor insurance policy will protect you.

Glossary: An ‘A to Z’ Explanation of TREVO Shield

% of Trip Rate
The percentage of the booking fee that is paid by your Guest to you (the Host) in exchange for the use of your TREVO-listed car. You receive a percentage of the trip rate — after subtracting the costs of your protection plan (including the TREVO platform fee) and other deductions by TREVO.

Surplus Charge
This is the amount that you have to pay to Trevo for each and every claim that TREVO Insurer approves, even if the incident is NOT your fault.

Exterior Dents / Damages
Our Shield 65 and Shield 60 Plans cover exterior damages to your TREVO-listed car’s body, paint and bumper. This EXTRA Safe feature is applicable in the event of a collision by your Guests. All dents / damages claims are subject to terms & conditions set by TREVO.

Compulsory Excess Relief
For every Insurance claim there is a portion that you will be required to pay as the first amount that you have to bear; as agreed to in your Insurance policy – the amount is known as ‘excess’. TREVO Shield offers a waiver to the Excess.

Towing and Roadside Assistance
TREVO Shield offers up to RM200 in towing costs for your car to Allianz-approved workshops.

There are 3 TREVO Shield Plans available for car hosts:

Pelepasan NCD

In consideration of the Shield 60, TREVO agrees to compensate you the NCD that you may forfeit due to a claim being made under TREVO Shield. The amount is one-off and is equal to your NCD entitlement as stipulated in your Private Motor Insurance Policy for the current Period of Insurance.

  2. Anda menukar Pelan Shield 60 kepada Pelan lain
  3. Anda menarik kelayakan NCD daripada Insurans Motor Persendirian anda

Bagaimanakah Pelepasan NCD berfungsi:

NCD = RM550
