"Wiki loves monuments" is the world's largest photo competition. Its goal is to gather as many quality pictures of different cultural monuments as possible from each of the participating countries and to make Wikipedia more detailed. Cultural heritage is an important part of the knowledge Wikipedia collects and disseminates. Everybody can contribute pictures as well as write articles. An image is worth a thousand words, in every language at once and the people can (re)discover the cultural, historical, or scientific significance of their neighbourhood. Every national contest will be able to nominate some of their winning pictures for the international contest. These nominated pictures will be judged by the international jury, which will then award extra prizes to the best images from all participating countries. Participate[edit]Explore the list of cultural monuments in every region in Bulgaria. You can upload photos of architectural reserves, archaeological sites, tombs, medieval fortresses, bridges, Renaissance houses, churches, monasteries, mosques, synagogues and other religious temples by clicking on the button below. It is mandatory to add a description of where the picture is from. Please DO NOT upload pictures of monuments whose authors are alive or have died less than 70 years ago because there is no Freedom of panorama in Bulgaria! History of the contest[edit]The contest is inspired by the successful 2010 pilot in the Netherlands, which resulted in 12,500 freely licensed images of monuments that can now be used in Wikipedia and by anybody for any purpose. The 2012 contest in 35 countries resulted in more than 350,000 images submitted by over 15,000 participants, adding to the sum of all human knowledge gathered on Wikipedia. In 2013 and 2014 volunteers are enthusiastically paving the way to make participation easy for others. In 2015, in nearly 40 countries all over the world, a national contest was organised with their national monuments, partners, rules, events and winners. In 2015 Bulgaria took part at this contest for the first time. Over 1700 images were uploaded during the contest. In 2016 Bulgaria participated for the second time in the competition, holding a stable level (over 1,100 photos, many of which with exceptionally good quality). Several participants from abroad took part with photos from Bulgaria, one of them ranked even in 5th place. 56 countries are participating in Wiki loves Monuments 56 this year. Bulgaria joins for the third time in a row. Participate: Locally or globally[edit]If you have ever taken pictures (or videos!) of cultural heritage monuments of Bulgaria, we encourage you to upload them under a free licence in Wikimedia Commons - Wikipedia's multimedia repository. This way it will be able for your works to be used for illustrating encyclopedic articles and enlarging the range of digital content under free licence. Eligible for the contest are images, uploaded between 1 September and 30 September, but they might have been taken before this period. Furthermore, if you have taken images of monuments of the cultural heritage of another country, you have the right to participate in the corresponding national part of the contest "Wiki Loves Monuments". The sole requirement is that the contest is conducted in this country during this year (2015). Please check the time frame of the contest in that country, because it might be slightly different. In the square further down you will see a full list of the countries, in which the contest takes place this year. According to the same principle, foreigners, who have visited Bulgaria, are welcome to participate with their free images in the Bulgarian phase of the contest. In any case, in order to upload an image for participation in the contest, you need a registration in Wikimedia Commons and a valid e-mail, stated in the preferences. With this registration you can log in afterwards in all language versions of Wikipedia and its sister projects of Wikimedia. Please, upload only images, of which you are the author. Timeline[edit]
Organizers and Jury[edit]Organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 are Spiritia, Vodnokon4e and Spasimir. The jury for the national phase of the contest will consist of at least three jurors with different abilities and experiences, and is being chosen and will be announced before 30th September 2016. The jury has to choose ten images which will participate in the international phase of the contest. The international jury will rank the winners among the nominated images and will present the prizes. Prizes[edit]The national juries will nominate photos for the international contest, which has its own jury.
